P-Noy human again in last Sona

AL MENDOZA - GEN ADMISSION

By Al S. Mendoza

SO, President Aquino can be friendly after all.

He proved that in his last Sona (State of The Nation Address), showing the world, grandly, that he was human again.

If he appeared monstrously villainous in his four previous Sonas, this time, P-Noy was man enough to exhibit a marshmallow heart.

Did he not even cry, his voice cracking in the end?

Before this year’s Sona, he was mostly belligerent mood, practically delivering one scathing sermon after another from 2010 onwards.

Who could forget his “Saan kayo kumukuha ng kapal ng mukha?” tirade aimed at callous Customs officials from top to bottom?

That netted the head of Ruffy Biazon, the Customs chief.

At first, P-Noy rejected Biazon’s resignation.

He was roundly booed.

When Biazon resigned a second time, P-Noy, his back against the wall, had no choice but to accept it.

P-Noy’s reign has actually been a joy to watch all this time as it has suspense and, more to the point, a touch-and-go character.

For example, after Sen. Serge Osmena called for Jericho Petilla’s resignation as Energy secretary over persistent power outages, Petilla bit the bait.

But instead of accepting Petilla’s resignation, P-Noy rejected it.

However, when Light Rail Transit chief Al Vitangcol, accused by the Czech ambassador of having demanded a $30-million “grease money” in exchange for train coaches, offered to resign, P-Noy immediately accepted it.

And then this.

When Budget secretary Butch Abad, feeling the heat in his crucial moves to release billions of pesos in the DAP (Disbursement Acceleration Program) project that was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, offered to resign, P-Noy said no.

Amid cries of “moro-moro” and accusations that the President was being a friend-lover up to the very end, P-Noy stood his ground.

In his last Sona, P-Noy avoided praising Abad but not several of his men, including Proceso Alcala.

P-Noy was also careful enough during his Sona not to pat the back of Kiko Pangilinan, his new Agriculture point-man who seems to be doing the job assigned him that well: Fix the rice mess and other farm-related concerns.

Had P-Noy lauded Kiko, it would have been a blunder as Kiko was seated in the gallery next to Alcala, the disgraced but still incumbent Agriculture boss.

But a friendly Sona it was no doubt, nothing really spectacular came out of it.

No forthcoming healthcare benefits mentioned.

No added bonuses to pensioners and senior citizens.

No help to our beleaguered teachers affected by the K to 12 scheme.

No additional jobs locally so that our people’s exodus to usually unfriendly territories in the Middle East will remain unabated.

In short, no nothing.

Thus, the “last two minutes” of P-Noy’s last two years remains just that: A mystery only Kris Aquino, shedding a tear or two at her brother’s Sona’s tailend, would know.

Welcome to neverland.
