Jessica wuz robbed; we wuz robbed

By Al S. Mendoza

HOW would you describe the debacle suffered by Jessica Sanchez in the American Idol?

I’ll do it in three words:  Jessica wuz robbed!

Or, we, the Filipino people, wuz robbed!

No, it’s not that I’m being a poor sport.

No, it’s not because Jessica is my compatriot.

No, it’s not that I’m being anti-American.

I have always believed in objectivity.  If a winner deserves the win, then that’s it.  To be objective always is the only way by which we could live properly in this trickery-laden world.

Jessica being a fellow Filipino is immaterial.  Being good knows no race.  Jessica is good and her being Pinoy is merely accidental.

I’ve never been an anti-American per se. I love the American people.  What I detest is America’s imperialist ways since time immemorial, simply because America’s leaders tend to be hegemony-driven.  If Jessica were American, I would have voted for her without hesitation as the 2012 American Idol winner.

Phillip Phillips is good, too.  In fact, he’s almost as good as Jessica Sanchez.

That’s why for American Phillip to defeat Filipino Jessica on Thursday, I can’t take that sitting down.

I need to stand up and speak up, not only on behalf of Jessica but also on behalf of the Filipino people.

For, we wuz all robbed.

We had been insulted yet again by America.

This is not about ethnicity issues, racial discrimination if you wish.

This is about singing, for Chrissakes.

This is about talent, for Chrissakes.

And this is about who is the best of them all, for Chrissakes.

Not to brag but I know when a singer is good or not.

And not to brag again, but I know how to sing, too.

And every Filipino is known worldwide as a good singer.

Today, Jessica Sanchez is the best not only in the American Idol contest but in the entire universe as well.

Every one of us has his/her time to shine on planet Earth.

It’s Jessica’s time now but, alas, that one moment in time for Jessica has been, like the 2004 presidential election, stolen from her.

But I take refuge in the fact that American Idol has been flawed since its inception 11 years ago.

Know why?

It’s not the real judges (Randy, J-Lo & Steven) that pick the yearly winner in the contest.

Rather, it’s the American people that vote for the winner.

When the 132 million Americans elected Phillip Phillips the winner, they, in effect, stole the victory that – like FPJ in the 2004 presidential derby – rightfully belonged to Jessica Sanchez.

Sadly, they were licensed to steal it for their compatriot Phillip.

Thus, in effect, the American Idol was reduced to a battle between the colonizer (American) and the colonized (Filipino).

Flashback: The Americans robbed us of our impending victory over the Spaniards at the turn of the century.  Today, they did it again.

Indeed, history repeats itself.

And, funny, but it’s only singing.

Ah, life’s irony.  It happens all the time.
