Fight of The Century? No, Fake of The Century
By Al S. Mendoza
WHAT’S the latest in the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight?
As I was writing this, it’s still a no go. Nil. Nada. N’yet.
Mayweather, if the lady judge in Nevada doesn’t change her mind a second time, will start his jail term on June 1 for domestic violence.
How can one properly prepare for a mega fight when, in his mind, he’s going to jail after the bout, anyways?
Only Superman is capable of that.
Pacquiao appears fed up with Mayweather’s flip-flopping and uncertain decisions.
If reports are to be believed, Pacquiao now wants a rematch with Miguel Cotto, the Puerto Rican he had pummeled into submission to score a lopsided 12th-round TKO victory in 2009.
And now this: Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s American promoter, hates Mayweather like a skunk.
After twice failing to make Mayweather agree to face Pacquiao the last three years or so, Arum said he, too, is fed up.
“It’s almost useless talking to a guy who can’t make up his mind on such simple matters as when he’s going to take a bath or not,” said Arum of Mayweather. “He does not even have a manager or promoter that I can speak to. He keeps saying he wants to fight Pacquiao. But when I initiate negotiations with him, he runs away like a scared rabbit.”
As I keep saying, there’s really no use talking to the Loud Mouth. He’s all sound, no fury.
On record, only Freddie Roach wants the fight done in either May or June.
And who is Roach again?
He is Pacquiao’s American trainer.
I can only see one motive for Roach’s insistence: Money.
Sorry, but that’s the truth.
With that fight happening, a lot of people would benefit financially.
Foremost among them would be Pacquiao, Mayweather, Bob Arum and then, of course, Roach.
They are the major players in the fight that is being stubbornly labeled as The Fight of The Century for its sheer popularity.
Boxing has always been the haven for suckers. Financiers are dying to stage the fight, which could earn Pacquiao and Mayweather at least $50 million each.
But to me, I insist it won’t be The Fight of The Century and instead, it’s going to be The Farce of The Century, if not The Fake of the Century.
Mayweather will simply run and run and run in this fight and next, he’d laugh his way to the bank.
He’ll be so afraid of Pacquiao’s punching power he’ll never mix it up. He knows that a head-on collision is Pacquiao’s cup of tea.
Without a barroom brawl, only the runner wins: Mayweather.
But with a phone booth, toe-to-toe combat, only the brawler wins: Pacquiao.
So, will the fight ever happen at all?
It will. When, only God knows.
