The Church & Pacquiao are lethal 1-2 punches
By Al S. Mendoza
MANNY Pacquiao does not only profess to fight poverty.
The People’s Champ also fights the RH Bill.
And now the Divorce Bill, too.
Fighting poverty is a tall order.
Doesn’t Pacman know?
You can’t really fight poverty.
The poor will be with us – forever.
The most you can do is alleviate the poor. Help the poor.
And the way to help the poor is, of course, not to give alms to them all the time.
The best way to help the poor is to teach them the value of work, the value of dignity, the value of self-esteem.
You don’t work, you don’t eat.
You don’t work, you are an outcast.
You don’t work, you are a dead weight to society.
Pacquiao started his aim to fight poverty by building the first public hospital in Sarangani Province, where he is the congressman.
Caring for the sick is also in effect helping the poor.
A healthy poor insures a folk that can earn for their own upkeep.
Why does Pacman dislike the RH Bill?
I surmise it is his being a devout Roman Catholic.
Since the Church is opposed to the RH Bill, a legislation that seeks to legalize contraceptives to prevent pregnancy, so does Pacman.
Pacquiao even quotes the Bible: “Go forth and multiply.”
He had rephrased it (“Go on”), drawing fire from Miriam Santiago, the senator whose hairdo is as bizarre as her line of reasoning – at times, that is.
“His grammar is even wrong,” Miriam said, not sparing Pacquiao’s use of the English language which is, admittedly, mangled most of the time.
But what can we expect from the dude?
Because Pacquiao wallowed in abject poverty in his kid years, he was virtually unschooled.
When he became world boxing champion the first time, he was not even a high school graduate.
He would soon receive a special dispensation to earn a high school diploma by way of a reward for his global boxing exploits.
Today, he has pocketed eight world crowns in eight weight divisions – the most by any, living or dead – but he remains without a college degree.
Again, by special dispensation, he is pursuing undergraduate studies, hoping, he said, to one day become a lawyer.
Meanwhile, his Congress exploits have earned respect thus far from his colleagues – despite his fractured English, when espousing his cause on the floor.
He said he is also against the Divorce Bill, which was revived this week.
The Church, as was its stand before, will also oppose it.
RH Bill, Divorce Bill, or any other bill that has anything to do with the preservation of life and marriage – it will most likely be headed to the dustbin of history.
In this country, the Church almost always wins.
In this country, most politicians bow to the Church’s will.
In this country, guys like Pacquiao commands power of almost no equal.
Thus, the Church and Pacquiao – they are now the most lethal 1-2 combination punches in Congress.
Top that.
