What a shame, Mosley

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

IF you saw the fight, I believe you were also disgusted. The verdict was undeniably right, a clear victory for Pacman, but we can consider the fight one of the dullest of Paquiao since he reached stardom.

But please don’t blame Paquiao because we know that he tried his best to please the global spectators to be worthy of the $20M that he was to receive plus his share from the pay-per-view audience. Blame Mosley who refused to engage in a toe-to-toe battle after suffering a knockdown in the third round. He was a different Mosley after he was decked in that round, his third experience during his colorful 31 years of prize fighting. After that knockdown when he surely felt Pacman’s power, Mosley, a veteran of 21-world title fights, obviously just wanted to survive the clash for the $5M purse plus also his pay-per-view share.

What a shame. I hate to say it but it’s really sad to say that he gave America cause for shame, considering that Uncle Sam’s land is the land of the brave, as the American national anthem goes. He’s called “Sugar”, supposedly for being a “sweet” fellow, but he was clearly unsweetened when het met the fast and powerful lawmaker from Sarangani. And because of his cowardice, I dare say he should not become even be considered a candidate for the prestigious award of the boxers version of Hall of Fame.

It’s time for him to retire. His strong legs and hands are gone. He should know how to face reality. He’s not bankable anymore.

Reports say Pacman’s most probable next opponent is Juan Manuel Marquez, to solve once and for all the doubts that linger in the boxing world. Pacman, who scored a draw during his first meeting with Marquez and a split decision during their second encounter, will clash anew in November this year. I believe the third in this trilogy encounter will be very marketable and Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions who handles Paquiao will not be having any difficulty promoting the battle. It will be Philippines versus Mexico anew.

Ouch. And please don’t ask me anymore why I will be hurt again. And I beg you please not to tease me because you already know why. Period.

My big congrats to our Pangasinan cyclists who passed the qualifying race held on May 6 in Tarlac City. The East Pangasinan squad, according to reports reaching me, will be composed of 2006 Padyak Pinoy champion Santy Barnachea of Umingan, Baler Ravina of Asingan, Emil Pablo also of Umingan, Salvador Salvador and Juancho Callorina of San Manuel, and my namesake Jesus Garcia of Sta. Maria. Alternate member is Arlex Tembreza of Urdaneta City. The six-man group will most likely be coached by Tour of Luzon veteran Elpidio Camat of Laoac.

The West-Central Pangasinan team will be skippered by 2003 Tour Pilipinas king Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio, Renato Sembrano of Mangaldan, Reynaldo Navarro of San Jacinto, Renier Clauna of Bugallon, Mark Julius Bonzo of Sual and Rene Esteban of San Fabian. Reserve is Bernard Biasura of San Fabian. The team will be mentored by my son Jazy, who owns the Jazysports-Beacon and whose team of riders is called “Pitaki Boyz.”

Some elite Pangasinan pedal pushers like Sherwin Carrera of San Fabian, Ericson Obosa of Manaoag, and Irish Valenzuela of Mapandan will represent the 7-Eleven group and Nilo Estayo of Pozorrubio will lead the Ilocandia squad.

Mabuhay kayo guys. Keep up the good work.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Revelation1:7-8
