Election shockers & all, let’s go NBA for a change
By Al S. Mendoza
THE May 10 election is history.
Noynoy Aquino winning isn’t a shocker. Noynoy has always been the presidential front-runner from Day One.
But Jojo Binay winning shocks us all. He was a dark horse (no pun intended), but capturing the VP from Mar Roxas is the Story of The Year.
Some say Binay won because of Chiz Escudero’s endorsement.
Others say some people within the Noy-Mar camp were saboteurs and pushed for Binay instead of Roxas.
They had Noy-Bi in place of Noy-Mar all along.
Still others say Korina Sanchez, Mar’s showbiz wife, didn’t smile much at people and that helped pull Roxas down.
Instead of gaining voters, Korina shooed away voters.
Well, I was a witness to that.
While in Iloilo last April, I saw how Korina ignored people in the restaurant of the hotel where we were both billeted.
My tablemates and fellow diners nearby kept saying, “Isnabera naman pala si Korina. Nakakabawas ng boto iyan.”
Need I say more?
On home front, Manay Gina beating Manang Celia isn’t a shocker, too. You have JDV as your hubby, how can you lose?
And, yes, Benjie Lim’s victory over Buloy Al Fernandez is neither a shocker.
That infamous fracas involving Buloy Al’s son days before May 10 boosted Benjie’s stock.
Pundits admit the incident gave Buloy Al a nasty blackeye, paving the way for Benjie’s unimpeded march to victory.
Buloy Al, the true sport that he has always been known for, has conceded defeat in the most gracious manner imaginable.
And with Benjie regaining his old post, he finds himself quickly being ribbed again by Gonz Duque to “finally build a new City Hall” for Dagupan.
Since I hear no objection from Raffy Baraan, I second the motion.
After politics, we go back to sports.
The NBA Finals is on between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.
After speeding to a 20-point margin, the Lakers won Game 1 with plenty to spare last Friday, June 4.
I see no reason why the Lakers won’t win Game 2 tomorrow, June 7—the reason being that the match is to be played anew in Los Angeles.
So, looking at a highly probable 2-0 lead by Monday afternoon, the Lakers might just wrap up the best-of-seven series in Boston, where Games 3, 4 & 5 are to be staged?
However, I’m not much betting on that, although I have predicted the Lakers to win, 4-2.
Lakers, too, if there should be a Game 7.
Kobe Bryant, short of just two NBA championship rings to Michael Jordan’s 6, is simply just too difficult to stop.
The other Lakers are just as deadly—Pau Gasol, Derek Fisher, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest, Andy Bynum and even Sasha Vujacic, Farmar, Brown and Walton.
And the Celtics?
The champs of ’08 have become old fogeys they now could hardly match the speed and hustle of the still youngish Lakers–the champs of ’09.
Hey, Congressman Bataoil, lunch or dinner at Dagupena’s?
Bottle’s on me.
