My duo event

By Jesus A. Garcia Jr.

LAST week I was so busy directing and supervising two events in San Marcelino, Zambales. Cycling in the morning and boxing in the evening. The two sports events were organized and sponsored by former DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. in conjunction with the celebration of San Marcelino’s town fiesta, in coordination with the municipal government spearheaded by Mayor Jose F. Rodriguez and Vice Mayor Irene Canlas.

It was another first in my life to take care of two events in a single day. Honestly, I felt I spread my self thinly on that day but with God’s help I survived the tiring twin affair and both turned out rewarding and successful. Rewarding because a mammoth crowd was at both events to the delight of Ebdane and Rodriguez. The duo flagged off the cycling event and Ebdane awarded the winners.

Rodriguez attended the full 15 bouts in boxing and personally handed the cash prizes for the winners and losers. Successful because no untoward incident happened and the San Marcelinians really enjoyed the events, especially the boxing matches where gay boxers squared off to the delight of the crowd. Mayor Rodriguez said the boxing event was the first to be held in the history of San Marcelino.

The all-amateur cycling event was done in three categories and our local cyclists did not capture any top spot this time. We were only good for second place twice, category B (72 kilometer-race) and C (48 kilometers), courtesy of Benigno Molina and Diony Aquino, both from my town Mangaldan. These categories were won by Jason Bellosillo and Danny Alumpe of Olongapo, respectively. The A category (96 kilometers) was won by Nueva Ecija’s uprising star, the 17-year old Rustom Lim. Trophies and medals were awarded to the top ten winners.

Ebdane, who’s aiming for the governorship of Zambales and re-electionist Rodriguez said the two sports events will be repeated next year.

Carry on with the good work, guys. I’m a sports-minded fellow so I’m always behind you. For sure, you’ll capture the hearts of the young ones if you continue promoting sports. The youth are avid fun of sports.

I’m doing this article on Thursday and by the time you read this piece, the Baguio bikefest dubbed “Downhill – Uphill Extreme Race” set on February 26, which I directed, would already be over. As of this writing, 80 contestants were already listed to participate and as usual majority of them are from our province. Other contestants were from different provinces like La Union, Ilocos Sur, Zambales, Nueva Ecija and Vizcaya, Tarlac and Manila. Results of this race will be printed here next week.

Congrats to madam Amelita “Ming” Ramos for finally earning the nod of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as the legitimate president of Philippine Badminton Association (PBA). The former First Lady, wife of our kabaleyan former president Fidel V. Ramos, a badminton doubles champion in her younger days at the University of the Philippines, won over Erol Chan, the former coach of our national team who claimed to be the rightful PBA president. The BWF also continues to recognize Ramos’s set of officers, including Ret. Gen. Edgardo Aglipay as vice prexy, George Piano as sec. gen and Rod Tan-Gatue as treasurer.

It seems that the leadership for Badminton has been settled. How about in cycling? I think it’s getting worse. Cyclists are confused, including this writer. When will the rift end?  I don’t know. Only God knows.
