THE remains of a Filipino woman who was shot dead by her husband in the United States have been returned to the Philippines, while her family continues to grieve and call for justice.

The body of Erma Peralta Valerio was brought back to her hometown of Urbiztondo following her death in December 2025. Authorities said Valerio was allegedly shot by her husband, identified as Zheer Queja Malassab, a native of Isabela province, inside their home in Vallejo, California.

Valerio, 44, was described by relatives as the family’s main provider. She was the third of six siblings.

Family members said Valerio’s parents remain deeply affected by her death and are still struggling over her loss. Relatives also noted that Valerio rarely shared personal problems with her family, as she did not want to cause them worry.

Malassab was arrested in Pennsylvania, thousands of kilometers away from California, two days after the shooting, according to U.S. authorities.

Police discovered Valerio’s body after a friend reported her absence from work to the Vallejo Police Department. The friend later told authorities that Valerio and her husband had reportedly been involved in a serious argument before the incident.

The family said they are pursuing justice in connection with Valerio’s death as legal proceedings against the suspect continue in the United States.

Valerio was laid to rest on Saturday, January 17. (Ahikam Pasion)
