THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Region 1 has launched OPLAN Bakal, a renewed campaign against the illegal alteration of engine and chassis numbers on motor vehicles.

Regional Director Glorioso Daniel Martinez and Assistant Regional Director Engr. Eric Suriben are leading the operation to ensure that all vehicles on the road are properly registered and free from unlawful modifications.

The drive follows a directive from Acting DOTr Secretary Atty. Giovanni Z. Lopez and LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao, underscoring the need to maintain order and safety on the region’s roads.

RD Martinez urged vehicle owners to comply with legal requirements “to protect themselves and the community,” as LTO teams carry out regular roadside inspections to check registrations and detect possible tampering.

The LTO is coordinating with local government units and other law enforcement agencies to strengthen crime prevention efforts, noting that altered vehicles are often linked to criminal activities.

By enforcing proper documentation and registration, the agency hopes to curb the use of stolen or unregistered vehicles that may contribute to lawlessness in the region, Martinez added.

The LTO reminded the public that operating an unregistered motor vehicle carries a ₱12,000 fine. (Ahikam Pasion)
