OUT of the 2,410 inmates currently held in facilities under the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) across Region 1, more than half or 1,315 are incarcerated for drug-related offenses, according to the latest BJMP data.

Another 459 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) face rape charges, while 227 are involved in murder cases.

Despite the gravity of their crimes, BJMP officials remain hopeful that focusing on rehabilitation, not just incarceration, will help define the future of those behind bars.

“Our role is not just safekeeping but also transformation,” said Jail Senior Inspector Dalver Pulupul, chief of the Community Relations Service Section for BJMP Region 1.

The agency is actively promoting rehabilitation through education, skills training, livelihood programs, and moral recovery efforts in partnership with faith-based groups.

A recent success story involved two inmates who graduated on August 14 from educational programs in collaboration with the Pangasinan State University.

Livelihood training is also gaining momentum wherein inmates are taught to produce bags, baskets, and even coffins — which has been getting attention online for the craftsmanship and creativity. (Ahikam Pasion)
