Barangay council urges stricter dog containment

THE Barangay Council of Dalongue, Sta. Barbara urged residents to secure their pet dogs and cats to avoid animal bite incidents in the community, especially involving children.

Barangay Chair Angel Tamayo said that while there is already an ordinance requiring residents to secure their pets, it is not being fully enforced, and authorities are unable to round up roaming animals because the barangay or municipality has no impounding facility.

Further, residents resist following the law, citing the role of dogs in deterring potential burglars.

As a result, stray dogs continue to roam the streets, posing a threat to the safety of the residents.

Tamayo emphasized that the primary concern is public safety, especially for children who are often the victims of animal bites.

There is also a prevalent misconception in the barangay that the anti-rabies vaccine is ineffective, with some residents opting to seek traditional treatments from magtatandok or healers rather than getting vaccinated. (Ahikam Pasion)
