Pangasinan police on full alert during Holy Week
THE Pangasinan police ensured maximum visibility and quick response during the Holy Week as residents and tourists observed the annual religious event and long weekend break.
P/Colonel Rollyfer Capoquian, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office provincial director, said full preparations were made to ensure public safety, especially in public and crowded areas such as churches, transport terminals, and beaches.
“On holidays like this, when the public is celebrating, that’s exactly when they need our protection the most,” he said.
Noting the recurring problem of drownings during this period and the summer months, especially involving tourists unfamiliar with local water conditions, police have ramped up their Oplan Bandilyo, an information drive using mobile patrols and loudspeakers to warn beachgoers about strong currents.
While the police aren’t designated as lifeguards, Capoquian said most officers are well trained in search and rescue and are prepared to respond to emergencies.
“We have swimmers and trained responders. When it comes to saving lives, our officers act fast — training or not, lifeguard or not,” he said.
The police also watched out for petty crimes such as theft and physical altercations, which are common at religious sites where there are usually large crowds.
Meanwhile, several areas, including San Quintin, have been placed on the watch list ahead of the May 12 elections. While no formal election-related protests have been reported, the police are taking a “proactive approach” by mediating early signs of political tension between rival groups.
“We’re already talking to both camps — letting them know that violence is not the answer. We want our people to choose freely and safely,” Capoquian said.
Recent reports of armed individuals and raids in parts of Pangasinan, including one involving residents from other provinces, were also addressed. A joint operation with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group led to the confiscation of several weapons.
“We are monitoring all suspicious movements closely, especially with the elections coming up,” Capoquian said. “Rest assured, our checkpoints are active, and our intelligence teams are alert,” added. (Eva Visperas)
