Police dismiss posts on ‘white van kidnappers’
URBAN legends come and go, and come again.
In Pangasinan, tales of a white van going around and kidnapping children have resurfaced, spreading fear among netizens.
There have recently been numerous posts online, particularly on Facebook, claiming that these alleged kidnappers have resumed their modus operandi of abducting children to “harvest their organs,” which are then sold in the black market.
But are these stories true? No, says the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO).
In an interview over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan on Thursday morning, February 13, P/Captain Socorro Arciaga of the PPPO’s Public Information Office, said these online posts and videos circulating are false.
“For the record, no reports have been received by the police. All these posts are unvalidated,” she said.
A now-deleted social media post even named the towns of Sta. Barbara, Tayug, and San Manuel as areas where alleged abductions happened.
Another video, uploaded by a certain Agt Fam, shows an alleged incident in a gasoline station somewhere in Pangasinan, which turned out to be a very old video.
Police officials from these towns have belied the incident, saying no such crimes have been reported to their stations.
Arciaga urged the public not to share unconfirmed reports to avoid fear and unnecessary panic among the community.
She also noted that spreading fake news is a crime under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. (Ahikam Pasion)
