TWO weeks into the election period that started January 12, the police caught 10 gun ban violators in Pangasinan out of the 13 total cases across the Ilocos Region.

Two were recorded in La Union with two, and one in Ilocos Sur, according to P/Lt. Col. Benigno Sumawang Jr., public information officer at Police Regional Office 1 reported.

At the same time, he said 74 firearms were surrendered since the gun ban took effect.

Meanwhile, to closely monitor potential election-related incidents, the police classified 13 municipalities in the region as “areas of concern,” including seven towns and cities in Pangasinan, namely: Dagupan City, Urdaneta City, Aguilar, Binmaley, Malasiqui, Mangaldan, and Sual.

Pangasinan, among the top three vote-rich provinces nationwide, accounts for 60% of the total registered voters in the region with 2,156,306, according to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Region 1 Assistant Regional Director Atty. Reddy Balarbar.

La Union has 554,274 registered voters; Ilocos Sur, 487,233; and Ilocos Norte, 436,087.

Meanwhile, COMELEC is currently conducting an Automated Counting Machines (ACM) Roadshow, covering municipalities, cities, and barangays in the region to educate voters on the proper use of the machines, which are sourced from the South Korean company MIRU.

The office is also gearing up to conduct training for the electoral board members who will facilitate the elections.

The official campaign period for national level candidates will commence on February 11 and will run until May 10, while candidates for local positions, such as governors and municipal councilors, will begin their 45-day campaign period on March 28.  (Ahikam Pasion)
