ELECTION PERIOD DAY 1

SIX persons were arrested in Pangasinan on January 12, the first day of the election period, for violating the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

In line with heightened security measures for the May 12 elections, police across Region 1 conducted over 500 simultaneous Comelec checkpoints to enforce the prohibition on the carrying of firearms and other deadly weapons.

During the operation, law enforcement officials seized five small firearms and one firearm replica from the suspects. The identities of those arrested have not been disclosed.

Speaking at the Monday flag-raising ceremony at Camp Oscar Florendo, Police Regional Office 1 Director Brigadier General Lou Evangelista emphasized the crucial role of checkpoint operations in maintaining election security.

Palagi nating ipaalala sa mga mamamayan ang kahalagahan ng pagsunod sa batas sa panahong ito ng eleksyon. Nararapat nating sundin ang mga dos and donts ngayong election season, kabilang na ang prohibition on carrying firearms without authorization and other election offenses,” he said.

The arrested persons will face appropriate legal charges, as authorities have vowed to intensify operations throughout the election period.

Authorities also urged the public to report any suspicious activities involving firearms or other election-related violations. (Eva Visperas)
