P1.5-M reward offered for arrest of Onia’s killers
A P1.5-million reward has been put up by the Abono Party-list for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder of its national president, Umingan Municipal Councilor Ponciano “Onyok” Onia.
Onia, 59, was gunned down on December 7, 2024, in Barangay Lubong, Umingan, while driving his SUV with two employees.
Engr. Rosendo So, founder of Abono, announced that P1 million will be awarded for the capture of the mastermind, while P500,000 for the arrest of the shooters.
Onia was ambushed by gunmen on a black Honda Click motorcycle while at an intersection. The killing has sent shockwaves through the local community, where Onia was known for his leadership and advocacy for farmers and workers.
In a statement, the Abono Party-list described Onia’s death as a “tragic and senseless act” and vowed to continue his work in championing the rights of farmers, workers, and rural communities. “We will not be swayed by darkness,” the party said, calling for collective action against the ongoing violence that has claimed many lives.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan condemned Onia’s killing, with Vice Governor Mark Lambino calling it “senseless” and urging authorities to resolve the case swiftly. Board members observed a moment of silence in honor of the slain councilor during their session on December 9.
Board Member Carol Dizon-Sison, president of the Pangasinan Councilors’ League, sponsored a resolution condemning Onia’s killing and offering condolences to his bereaved family on behalf of the provincial board.
Condolences also poured in from other political figures around the province.
The police have formed a Special Investigation Task Group to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
On December 10, concerned citizens of Umingan gathered for a prayer rally in Barangay San Leon at the yard of Onia’s family home. (Eva Visperas)
