AWOL soldier kills arresting soldier, commits suicide
TWO personnel of the Philippine Army ended dead, including the AWOL soldier who refused to be arrested.
P/Colonel Jeff Fanged, Pangasinan Police Provincial Office director, identified the suspect as Dennis Quejado, married, a resident of Barangay Uyong, Labrador town. He was a Scout Ranger based in San Miguel, Bulacan.
The incident began at 8:20 in the morning, when personnel of the Philippine Army arrived in Barangay Uyong to fetch Quejado, ordering him to report back and explain why he went AWOL.
Quejado, according to Fanged went on AWOL since the second week of January 2024.
Before Quejado joined the arresting personnel, he shot one of them dead reportedly in a fit of outrage.
“Matiwasay siyang sasama kaso nang palabas na sila, nagkaroon ng insidente na binaril niya ang isang kasamahan nila, “he said.
He chased other Army personnel who retreated, then he barricaded himself in his house.
Police Captain Dario Ico, acting chief of police of Labrador PNP, received reports and immediately responded to the scene but he too was fired upon by Quejado.
During the stand-off, policemen suggested a negotiation, to which Qujeado agreed.
Fanged said Quejado demanded an uncle of his, a retired major, to accompany him in the negotiation.
But before the setting for the negotiation could be completed, Quejado shot himself.
His brother went out of the house, and confirmed that Quejado committed suicide.
Fanged refused to disclose the other soldier’s identity as his family is still being contacted.
Reason behind Quejado’s AWOL status is still under investigation at presstime. (Ahikam Pasion)
