No ‘tokhang’ but more voluntarily admit to drug use today – DOH
THE Department of Health Region I has noted a higher voluntary admission by individuals using illegal drugs.
Dr. Rosalina Caoile, chief of the DOH Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in Dagupan City, said the center receives an average of 20 to 25 persons who use drugs (PWUDs) monthly.
Despite the number being lower compared to 2016 during the height of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s Oplan Tokhang that reached 50 PWUDs per week, Caoile said the difference today is that individuals are voluntarily approaching the TRC to be rehabilitated.
She attributes the higher number of persons voluntarily submitting for admission to the stricter and no-nonsense anti-illegal campaigns of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Philippine National Police (PNP), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
Caoile was unable to cite details for each province in the region, but she said that there are more males being admitted to the TRC for use of illegal drugs.
Meanwhile, Caoile urged family members with PWUDs to support them until they manage to turn their lives around.
“Malaking tulong ang family support upang manumbalik sa maayos na pamumuhay ang mga PWUDs”, she said. (Ahikam Pasion)
