Over 2,000 unlicensed firearms deposited at police stations
MORE than 2,000 firearms have been voluntarily deposited by their owners at various police stations as a result of the police’s intensified campaign against loose firearms, preparatory to holding of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.
According to police authorities, the statistics show an average of five firearms being surrendered daily throughout the province since January.
“Among those surrendered were firearms with expired licenses that were not renewed immediately, and their LTOPFs (License to Own and Possess Firearms) already expired,” said P/Col Jeff E. Fanged, Provincial Director of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office.
He said the owners of the surrendered firearms can reclaim these once they comply with the necessary requirements and renew their licenses.
“Under the law, once the gun license has expired, it is already considered unlicensed,” Fanged emphasized.
Some of the firearms with expired licenses have been surrendered as early as four years ago remain unclaimed. Challenges in transferring ownership, such as when the owner is abroad or has passed away were the submitted reasons. (Eva Visperas)
