THE Police Regional Office 1 reported an average decrease of 44 percent in the region’s index crimes during the observance of Holy Week 2023.

Index crimes refer to crimes against persons and property with eight focus crimes, namely, murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, motorcycle and motor vehicle carnapping.

From April 3 to 9 this year, nine index crimes were recorded as compared to the previous observance of Holy Week from April 11 to 17 last year with 16 incidents.

On drowning incidents, 14 were recorded (11 in Pangasinan, two in La Union and one in Ilocos Norte), representing a 30 percent decrease recorded in the same period of Holy Week last year with 20 drowning incidents.

On road crash incidents, 70 incidents were recorded reflecting an average decrease of 14 percent compared to the previous year’s 81 road crash incidents.

Meanwhile, P/Brig. Gen. John Chua attributed the decrease in these incidents to the strict implementation of the PNP’s ‘Ligtas SUMVAC’ and the intensive information campaign and preventive measures conducted by all police stations and units in the region.

“We have maximized the deployment of our personnel in Police Assistance Desks and all places of convergence such as public terminals, churches and tourist destinations to ensure the safety and security of everyone,” Chua said.

The PNP regional office will continue the implementation of its “Ligtas SUMVAC’ until May 31, 2023 to ensure peaceful celebration of other holidays and activities ahead including Labor Day and Flores de Mayo. (Eva Visperas)
