Pangasinan has most cyber-related crimes in Region I, say
MOST number of cybercrime and cyber-related crimes in Region 1 were committed and reported in Pangasinan.
P/Colonel Domingo Soriano, PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) Chief of Operation Management Division in the region said during the establishment of the Provincial Cyber Response Team in Dagupan City on Monday, February 13, at the Dagupan City People’s Astrodome.
“Ito ang dahilan kung bakit nag-establish ng team dito sa Pangasinan. Karamihan sa mga nagrereklamo galing po talaga sa Pangasinan”, said Soriano.
Soriano added that while the PNP-ACG was formed in 2013, it was only in 2017 when the group’s Anti-cybercrime Unit (ACU) became operational.
In those days, victims of cybercrime and other online crimes had to go to San Fernando City in La Union just to lodge their complaints. And when COVID-19 pandemic started the series of lockdowns in towns and provinces, complainants had no choice but to drop their complaints.
“Ito po yung nagtulak sa atin na maglunsad din ng team sa Pangasinan, upang mailapit sa publiko ang ACU”, said Soriano.
He said he hopes that with the ACU established in Pangasinan, complainants will find it convenient to file their complaints against violators and thereby make others more careful about using internet for criminal purposes.
Soriano expects an uptick in the number of lodged complaints as soon as the ACU in Pangasinan becomes operational.
According to Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 1 P/Lt. Colonel Devaras, the establishment of the unit’s satellite office in Dagupan is timely because of online scamming is now becoming rampant nowadays.
With the PNP Anti-Cyber Crime Group satellite office, incidence of online scamming could hopefully be minimized in Dagupan City and Pangasinan as there is now a police office monitoring the culprits online.
As a matter of fact, the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit is receiving at least 20 complaints about online scamming in Region 1 per month. (Ahikam Pasion /Joana de Vera/Rona Racca/104.7IFM Dagupan)
