DOH 1 cautions vs holiday food risks
THE Department of Health–Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Region 1 warned the public against food poisoning and diet-related health problems as food consumption spikes during the Christmas season.
Dr. Rhuel Bobis, Medical Officer IV of DOH-CHD Region 1, said cases of foodborne illness typically increase during the holidays due to improper food preparation and inadequate cooking.
He stressed the need for strict cleanliness in food production, selling, and preparation to prevent spoilage and contamination. Proper food handling, serving, and storage were also underscored to ensure food safety.
The DOH likewise reminded residents, especially those with hypertension or high cholesterol, to avoid sudden dietary changes and excessive intake of rich, salty foods common during celebrations.
The advisory is part of the agency’s continuing public health campaign promoting safe and healthy practices amid increased communal meals during the holidays. The DOH urged families to celebrate responsibly to avoid preventable illnesses. (Ahikam Pasion)
