A new landmark of faith is rising along New de Venecia Highway in Lucao District, Dagupan City, following the groundbreaking ceremony for the Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help on October 28, 2025. The event honors the enduring devotion of the late spouses Jimmy and Remedios Fernandez.
“They began as two Catholics united in love and faith, raising nine children with devotion and care. When Jimmy was called home to the Lord, Remedios stood alone with nine young hearts to guide. In her deepest hour of need, she turned to Our Mother of Perpetual Help, mother to mothers,” read the message printed in the program.
“Her devotion, born from loss and nurtured through struggle, became our family’s spiritual inheritance — a perpetual grace passed to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. This church stands as testimony to a widow’s faith that moved mountains, and a Mother who never abandons her children,” it added.
Archbishop Socrates Villegas of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan lauded the occasion as a “celebration of hope,” reminding the faithful that “hope is beyond optimism—optimism can frustrate, but hope does not disappoint.” He urged the Church to remain steadfast in transforming society “through witness, wisdom, and unwavering hope,” invoking the intercession of the Blessed Mother to guide the faithful.
A message from the family, delivered through Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez, daughter of the couple, described the project as a heartfelt tribute to their mother’s faith. “This church rises not only from the ground, but from the heart,” the message said. “It is built in remembrance of our beloved mother, whose life was a living prayer and whose faith continues to guide us,” it added.
Designed by Dominic Galicia Architects, the shrine draws inspiration from Byzantine iconography and local brickwork traditions, symbolizing a harmony between heritage and grace. When completed, it will stand as a sanctuary of devotion and a lasting reminder of a mother’s faith that continues to move generations. (Eva Visperas)
