NEARLY half of all documented HIV cases in Region 1 are from Pangasinan, according to the latest data released by the Department of Health (DOH).

As of March 2025, the Ilocos Region has recorded a total of 4,151 HIV cases. Pangasinan accounts for almost half of the figure, reflecting a steady climb in infections since the first case in 1984.

From January to March this year alone, 174 new cases were registered, underscoring what health officials describe as an urgent public health concern.

Mary Grace Areola, Information Officer of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) in Region 1, said the upward trend calls for stronger and sustained interventions. She highlighted the ABCDE strategy—Abstinence, Being Consistently Faithful, Correct and Consistent Condom Use, Avoiding Vices, and Promoting Education and Early Detection—as key to slowing the spread.

Health experts stress that early testing remains essential for timely treatment and preventing further transmission. They encourage individuals, especially those in high-incidence areas, to know their HIV status.

Areola said the CPD is pushing for wider awareness campaigns and more proactive community efforts to confront the rising numbers.

She added that Pangasinan’s high share of cases signals the need for intensified outreach, support services, and accessible testing to protect public health. (Ahikam Pasion)
