Post-quake precautionary measures taken after Oct 9 tremor
SEVERAL local government units (LGUs) in Pangasinan promptly implemented precautionary measures, including the suspension of classes and government work, following a magnitude 4.8 – later revised to 4.4 – earthquake that rocked parts of Northern Luzon at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 9.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the quake was about three kilometers northeast of Pugo, La Union.
The tremor was felt at Intensity III in Villasis and Sison, Intensity II in Dagupan City, and Intensity I in Lingayen and Urdaneta City.
Phivolcs said aftershocks were not expected. Nonetheless, suspensions were made as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students, employees, and the general public.
The municipalities of Asingan, Rosales, Sto. Tomas, Pozorrubio, and Basista suspended classes in all levels in both public and private schools, while the towns of Mangaldan, Bayambang, and Mapandan also halted government office operations.
Despite the disruption, essential services, including those related to disaster preparedness, health, emergency response, and other frontline services, continued uninterrupted.
In Dagupan City, where the earthquake was felt with Intensity II, classes and government work proceeded as usual. Mayor Belen Fernandez appealed to the public to remain calm and prepare for any further emergencies.
The earthquake’s impact was felt at varying intensities across different areas, ranging from Intensity I in Lingayen and Urdaneta City, up to Intensity III in Sison town.
The most intense shaking was reported in other parts of Northern Luzon, particularly in Baguio City, where Intensity V was recorded.
In Urdaneta City, students from a local university were evacuated after the quake was felt in the area.
In response to the tremor, the Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, along with municipal disaster response teams, closely monitored the situation. (Ahikam Pasion)
