12 barangays in Calasiao flooded post-Typhoon Paolo

A dozen barangays in Calasiao have been severely affected by flooding following the onslaught of Typhoon Paolo, prompting local authorities to suspend face-to-face classes at several public schools on October 6, 2025.

According to Freddie Villacorta, chief of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the floods were caused by rising waters from the Marusay River.

While there was no heavy rainfall directly over the town, the water levels surged due to the continuous downpour brought by the typhoon in the surrounding areas.

“The floodwaters have yet to recede from the effects of Typhoons Nando and Opong, and now, the rains brought by Typhoon Paolo have worsened the situation,” she added.

Regarding the damage to the gabion-style dike in San Vicente caused by Typhoon Opong, Villacorta said local authorities have coordinated with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region 1, the provincial government, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

These agencies assured that repairs would begin once the floodwaters had subsided. If the DPWH is unable to start work immediately, the local government and provincial authorities will take the necessary steps to address the damage.

As of last week, the water flow around the dike remained strong.

“This situation serves as a wake-up call for the public to be more vigilant about ongoing projects, particularly flood control initiatives,” Villacorta emphasized.

The MDRRMO is closely monitoring the Marusay River, and authorities are continuing to assess the impact of the flooding. (Ahikam Pasion)
