THE long-anticipated traffic light system at Calasiao’s busiest intersection was officially turned over on August 29, 2025 by the provincial government to the Calasiao local government unit (LGU).

The ceremony was led by Mayor Patrick Caramat, Vice Mayor Kevin Roy Macanlalay, and the Sangguniang Bayan members with Gov. Ramon Guico III.

The project, which cost P11 million and was funded by the provincial government, aims to ease congestion at the major intersection linking the eastern and western corridors of the province.

The mayor thanked Guico for prioritizing the project, which he said was first discussed as early as 2021 during the administration of the late Mayor Mamilyn Caramat.

As for operations, the traffic lights currently function from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., but Caramat said the LGU continues to observe peak hours and may adjust schedules accordingly.

The mayor also said that while the traffic lights are a big help, they will not eliminate the need for human traffic enforcers.

Currently, Calasiao has 70 traffic personnel under its Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) — 60 on the ground and 10 in administrative roles.

To ensure effectiveness, Calasiao’s POSO personnel underwent a five-day training seminar last week led by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA). In addition, the local government engaged transport groups, including jeepney and tricycle drivers, through their associations (JODA and TODA).

With new businesses and investors flocking to Calasiao, local officials reiterated the importance of infrastructure improvements to support economic growth.

“We are currently working on our Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which will include alternate road networks to ease traffic further,” Caramat said. (Eva Visperas)
