Dagupan prepares for Typhoon ‘Nando’
DAGUPAN City Mayor Belen Fernandez convened on Thursday, September 18, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) to prepare for the potential impact of Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa) over the weekend to early this week.
State weather agency PAGASA said Nando, located east of Luzon and moving west as of Friday, could potentially strengthen into a super typhoon category, although it was not expected to make landfall.
The typhoon’s trough, however, is wide and could bring rains to Pangasinan alongside the continued southwest monsoon.
Fernandez directed emergency responders to be on stand-by and prepare to evacuate residents from low-lying areas, coastal areas, and island barangays.
CDRRMC Ronald de Guzman said residents will be advised to get ready for possible pre-emptive evacuation.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Mirasol (International name: Mitag) unleashed heavy rains in eastern Pangasinan on Wednesday morning, flooding the towns of Balungao and Umingan, where hundreds of hectares of land planted with rice crops and vegetables were submerged.
Eastern Pangasinan was placed under typhoon wind signal no. 1 when Mirasol breezed through extreme northern Luzon. (Leonardo Micua)
