SP minority’s council boycott serves the majority right – VM BK
THE minority bloc in the just-concluded Dagupan Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) gave the majority members a taste of their own medicine when they intentionally skipped most of the sessions in the last weeks through official leave privileges.
Vice Mayor and SP Presiding Officer Bryan Kua – who was reelected last May 12 for another three-year term along with political ally Mayor Belen Fernandez – told The PUNCH that their boycott of the sessions was “deliberate” in retaliation for the majority members’ policy of obstructionism to the city administration in the past three years.
Kua led the boycott along with Councilors Michael Fernandez, Jeslito Seen, Dennis Canto, Marcelino Fernandez and Bradley Benavides.
They knew, he said, that the majority bloc composed of Councilors Celia Lim, Librada Reyna, Alvin Coquia, Marilou Fernandez, Alfie Fernandez, Redford Erfe-Mejia and Irene Acosta plotted to pass only self-serving resolutions and ordinances to salvage their political standing.
Their planned resolutions and ordinances merely seek to provide city government and national government agencies’ employees without a meritorious basis submitted to committee hearings.
Seen, meanwhile, slammed the majority councilors for their hypocrisy when they passed a resolution seeking that all new school buildings to be constructed by the city government be installed with an air-conditioning system.
He said that in the past three years, the majority rejected the passage of the supplemental budgets submitted by the mayor to build new school buildings and repair old ones.
He said the supplemental budget was only passed in November 2024 when three majority councilors were each slapped with a three-month suspension by the Office of the President due to their rowdy behavior during a session in September 2023. (Leonardo Micua)
