TO meet the increasing demand of more applicants for the Dagupan City scholarship program, Mayor Belen Fernandez asked the new Sangguniang Panlungsod led by Vice Mayor Bryan Kua and Majority Floor Leader Michael Fernandez to pass an ordinance adding 1,000 slots for tertiary education scholarships.

The additional 1,000 scholars will need an annual P50 million allocation.

Fernandez announced this in a press conference after the inauguration of the new city officials on June 28, acknowledging that the adjustment is due to the large number of senior high school students who graduated this year, many of whom come from poor families and need government support to pursue higher education.

Eligible scholars are bona fide residents of Dagupan as certified by their barangay captains and neighbors, have limited family income, and graduated with no failing grade in any subject.

Dagupan has been spending P200 million yearly for its 5,000 scholars, some of whom have already graduated from their chosen courses, while the others have already joined the ranks of professionals after passing government licensure examinations.

The mayor also asked for P20 million from the council for the installation of air-conditioning in all new public schools being constructed

“We cannot put air-conditioning in every classroom yet. But we are starting it now with the  P20 million outlay we are requesting from the new Sanggunian,” Fernandez explained.

At the same time, she said she plans to see Education Secretary Sonny Angara about the expansion of the one-storey school building being built by the Department of Education at the Caranglaan Elementary School into three levels to address potential flooding. (Leonardo Micua)
