Sea cucumber, abalone released in Infanta waters
IN celebration of the Month of the Ocean, 5,000 sea cucumbers and 650 juvenile abalones were released into the coastal waters of Infanta as part of a marine resource enhancement program aimed at restoring biodiversity and supporting local livelihood.
In a Facebook post of the town, it said the activity was spearheaded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Field Office I, led by Regional Director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan, in partnership with the Infanta local government through the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist.
Also supporting the initiative was Antonieta Evangelista, officer-in-Charge of both the Regional Mariculture Technology Demonstration and Enhancement Center in Lucap and the Provincial Fisheries Office in Pangasinan.
The dispersal activity was part of an ongoing program to enhance marine stocks of ecologically and economically valuable species. Sea cucumbers help maintain the health of marine ecosystems through nutrient cycling, while abalones contribute to reef productivity and are a high-value species in the aquaculture industry.
“This initiative not only supports ecological restoration but also strengthens the long-term sustainability of coastal livelihoods,” said Dir. Gaerlan, noting the importance of community collaboration in marine conservation efforts.
The Infanta government extended its appreciation to BFAR and its partners for their support and commitment to safeguarding the town’s marine resources. (Eva Visperas)
