San Quintin mayor appeals for calm, unity amid tension
SAN QUINTIN Mayor Florence Pagaduan-Tiu appealed for calm among residents last week amid heightening tension over perceived political violence relating to the May 12 midterm elections.
In a post written in Filipino on her official Facebook page on May 7, Tiu called for peace and unity not only as a pubic servant but “as a mother” wanting protection of her children over what she called continuing harassment, attempted kidnapping, and merciless killing perpetrated by armed men, supposedly for political reasons.
She cited a recent shooting incident at the Poblacion, where the victim was identified as a resident of adjacent Umingan town.
Police Provincial Director, P/Colonel Rollyfer Capoquian said the suspect has been identified and investigation is continuing.
“It is only now that these acts of violence and terrorism are happening in our peaceful town of San Quintin… Why are these things happening now?” said the reelectionist mayor, noting that political rivalries in past elections never involved violence.
San Quintin is one of the few towns in Pangasinan placed as an area of concern in this election due to intense political rivalry among candidates. (Leonardo Micua)
