MBTF plans air-conditioned classrooms in the city
IF REELECTED FOR ANOTHER TERM
DAGUPAN City Mayor Belen Fernandez said if reelected for another term in May, she plans to build at least 22 school buildings that are two to three stories high with an air-conditioning system in each classroom to enable students to cope with their lessons during days of high index.
In a campaign sortie in Barangay Mamalingling with Vice Mayor Bryan Kua and the entire UnliSerbisyo team last week, the mayor said rising temperatures amid global warming require adjustments in academic structures.
She said since starting this term in office in 2022, her administration built 22 high-rise school buildings in different barangays, which are all designed to be weather resilient though not air-conditioned.
Fernandez, like other mayors in different parts of the country, have been forced to issue orders canceling in-person classes due to high heat index.
She also said she intends to replace all arm-desk chairs with a separate chair and table, which modern schools in advanced countries have been adapting as studies indicate that these are more conducive to learning.
At the same time, she vowed to increase the number of college-level scholars in the city from 5,000 to 6,000.
She dismissed intrigues sown by the opposition that there is favoritism in the selection of her administration’s scholars, saying that sons and daughters of those who have less in life are given priority, unlike in previous leaderships when even non-residents of the city and are from rich families obtained scholarships.
