Dumping of wastes at old Bonuan dumpsite stopped
CLEARING OPERATIONS CONTINUING
FOR the first time in more than 60 years, there are no more household and industrial wastes being dumped at the Dagupan City’s dumpsite in Bonuan to allow for the clearing operations to continue in preparation for its transition into a tree park, according to Mayor Belen Fernandez.
In a talk to newsmen over Kabaleyan Channel on USATV, she said the City Waste Management Division (CWMD) has also stopped allowing scavengers to enter the dumpsite and has provided them with alternative livelihoods.
Fernandez reported that a large part of the site has already been cleared of mountains of garbage.
The newly arrived backhoe procured by the city government furrows the dried wastes that accumulated over the years for transfer to waiting five trucks that each bring four loads to the sanitary landfill in Urdaneta City daily.
The new pay loader also acquired by the city is being used in the meantime to clear portions of the Tondaligan baywalk that were covered by sand brought inland by past storm surges.
Fernandez continues to make a daily inspection of the dumpsite to monitor the progress of the ongoing clearing operations and assess what can still be done to hasten its conversion into a green space.
Some 2,000 tree saplings of various species made available by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) have already been planted in cleared areas of the dumpsite.
At the same time, Fernandez announced that the Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in 28 of the 31 barangays of Dagupan have already been cleared.
She said they are currently experimenting on a scheme where segregated garbage collected from homes and the markets can be brought directly to the Urdaneta landfill.
This is being done earnestly, she said, because of the observation that most residents of Dagupan are already practicing waste segregation at the household level. (Leonardo Micua)
