WOMEN residing in Dagupan can now avail of free mammogram screening at the City Health Office (CHO) following the recent purchase of the specialized mammogram machine that can help in the early detection of breast cancer.

The P17-million mammogram machine was blessed during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the CHO Diagnostic Building on April 9, spearheaded by Mayor Belen Fernandez and Dra. Ma. Julita de Venecia, OIC city health officer.

“We can save a lot of women of Dagupan City with this equipment,” said Fernandez as she thanked the  Sangguniang Panlungsod’s minority councilors for swiftly acting on the supplemental budget that included the needed funds for the mammogram machine, as the new majority in November 2024

Mayor Fernandez said she found out during her rounds of the barangays with CHO  that some women of the city are bed-ridden suffering from breast cancer.

Dr. Jamaica Caldona, focal person on breast cancer treatment, said early detection gives more effective and less invasive treatment options, and ultimately lowers the risk of death.

She urged women, especially those with lumps or even lesions on their breasts, to take advantage of the CHO’s free mammogram service, which can cost between P2,000 to P3,000 in private hospitals.

Councilor Michael Fernandez said that he and his fellow minority council members, including Vice Mayor Bryan Kua, approved the supplemental budget knowing that any delay in the purchase of the equipment compromises women’s health.  (Leonardo Micua)
