THE more than 60-year-old dumpsite in Bonuan is now considered effectively closed, according to Dagupan Mayor Belen Fernandez, although hauling of garbage from the site for delivery to the Urdaneta Sanitary Landfill continues.

Speaking before residents of Sitio Aling in Barangay Pantal, Fernandez said with the closure of the dumpsite, wastes from the Material Recovery Facilities, especially plastics, are now being picked up to be compressed and brought directly to the Holcim Cement Plant in Bulacan.

Kitchen or food wastes are being turned into cheap fertilizers for farms and gardens.

She said that of the 31 MRFs in the city, 80 percent have already been cleared, while the other 20 percent are in the process of being cleared.

The mayor reiterated the city government’s call for all residents to properly manage wastes segregation in their households.
