HEALTH experts called on the public to get screened annually for glaucoma to prevent irreversible blindness that is incurable but can be managed when detected early.

In a recent press conference, Dr. Lawrence Mangahas from the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center, said there is no cure for glaucoma but medications and laser treatments can slow its progression and potentially prevent severe outcomes such as complete blindness.

Mangahas explained that glaucoma is a condition that damages the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. As the damage progresses, it can lead to significant vision loss.

Dr. Lovely Keziah Flores added that while both diabetes and glaucoma affect the eyes, glaucoma often does not show symptoms until significant damage has occurred, making regular screenings crucial for early detection.

Mangahas said data show that approximately 78 million people are affected by glaucoma worldwide, or 40 out of every 200 individuals aged 40 and above experience this condition. (Ahikam Pasion)
