Pork demand slackens

PORK in all public markets of Pangasinan slackened as consumers refrained from buying after a slight price increase from P370 to P380 per kilo last week.

At the Manaoag Public Market, meat vendors said many consumers were buying just one-fourth to half kilo, leaving them with unsold stock at the end of the day. (Joana de Vera)

Death by firing squad to grafters backed in Dagupan 

A number of Dagupeños expressed support to the imposition of death penalty by firing squad to any official in government found guilty of graft and corruption as proposed in the House of Representatives.

Based on interviews by IFM News Dagupan, most said the death penalty by firing squad will be enough deterrent against graft and corruption, and other malfeasance, though some cautioned against the proposal based on religious beliefs. (Joana de Vera)

Pangasinans palay production slightly drop

THE Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) reported that palay production in 2024 declined slightly to 1,311,130.49 metric tons compared to 1,388,063.34 metric tons in 2023.

This decrease is not expected to affect local supply as the province remains beyond 100% self-sufficiency, producing almost double the demand with a 195.30% rice sufficiency rate in 2024. PAO is also anticipating an increase in output this year with the first planting cycle already underway. (Jam Victorio)

Local transport organization yet to file fare hike petition

THE One Pangasinan Transport Federation (OPTF) has not decided whether it will file a petition for fare increase despite a new round of fuel hikes this year that reached P3 per liter.

Bernard Tuliao, OPTF president, said their petition will ask for a fare increase from P13 minimum to P15. He added that he is aware that the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) rejected last week the petition of several transport organizations for minimum fare of P17 for all public utility jeepneys nationwide. Grandfather dead in motorcycle-SUV collision 

A 67-year-old grandfather who was bringing his six-year-old granddaughter to school on board a motorcycle was killed when their vehicle collided with a speeding SUV. The child also suffered fractures in different parts of her body.

Due to the impact of the collision, the grandfather was dragged 15 meters away from where the SUV and motorcycle collided. The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old, was apprehended and subsequently released after posting a bail bond of P40,000. (Mathew Pacheco)

PVO continues rabies vaccination program

 SOME 175 pet dogs and cats were given anti-rabies under a continuing rabies vaccination program of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).

A total of 1,630 vials of vaccines were also turned over by the PVO to various towns and cities to provide protection to pet dogs and cats from various diseases. (Jam Victorio)

Sitio Guam residents report unfinished canal project

SOME residents of Sitio Guam in Barangay Pantal, Dagupan City aired their complaints to IFM Dagupan over an unfinished drainage canal in their community that has become very smelly and nauseating, fearing that it may cause disease to people living nearby.

Kagawad Owen Navarro of Barangay Pantal said before the start of the construction of the project, the water in the drainage canal, located in a low-lying area, was no longer flowing. Only funding for Phase 1 of the project was released so far and is now exhausted, but Navarro assured that funding for the second phase will soon be released so that the project will be completed this year. (Mathew Pacheco)

8M tourists visit Manaoag

TOURISM continues to boom in Manaoag, considered as the Blessing Capital of the Philippines, according to Mayor Jeremy Agerico Rosario in an interview by IFM News Dagupan, citing an average of eight million visitors annually.

He bared the data as he inaugurated the 42 CCTV cameras installed in various strategic areas of the town to enhance the safety of visitors coming to Manaoag. (Mathew Pacheco)

2 children drown in Lingayen

TWO children from Victoria, Tarlac drowned last Saturday in Lingayen, particularly in Barangay Libsong East. The first victim was found floating in the water on the same day of the drowning while the body of the second victim was found in waters off Baybay Lopez in Binmaley a few days later.

Emergency response teams from the town and the province were immediately deployed after receiving the report of the drowning, but the children were not readily found. (Rona Racca)

Tomatoes now down to P50/k

THE price of tomatoes in Pangasinan is now down to an average of P50 per kilo from a high of P300/k in all the public markets of Pangasinan three weeks ago.

Farmers attributed the rise in the prices of tomatoes and other vegetables to the past typhoons and floods late last year when most of the farm products were destroyed. (Joana de Vera)

No increase yet in cut flower prices

THERE is still no movement in the prices of cut flowers in Dagupan City two weeks before the celebration of Valentine’s Day on February 14.

A survey by IFM Dagupan showed that the prices of cut flowers remain steady and vendors only expect prices of the commodity to rise sharply beginning the first week of February. (Joana de Vera)
