DPWH starts another flood-mitigation project in Dagupan

WHILE the upgrading of Perez Boulevard is in full swing, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to launch another flood mitigation project in Dagupan City, according to Mayor Belen Fernandez.

The new project involves the upgrading of Burgos Street from the corner of A.B. Fernandez Avenue to YMCA, a perennially flooded area during prolonged heavy rains and high tide.

Technical men of the DPWH were recently sent to Dagupan by Regional Director Rommel Tan to coordinate with the mayor and City Engineer Josephine Corpuz on the plans for the infrastructure work.

Fernandez said the drainage system on Burgos Street will be connected to the drainage system on Perez Boulevard, whose outflow would be at Pantal River through Rizal Street Extension near St. Therese Parish Church.

Flood on Burgos Street often spills over to the premises of the St. John the Evangelist Cathedral, often makes it inaccessible to church-goers.

Fernandez said the project complements the ongoing elevation of Jovellanos Street between the City Plaza and the church, funded from the city coffer, which is also flood-prone.

At the same time, the mayor said that the DPWH will lend one small dredging machine to the city to be used in clogged inner rivers and creeks to ensure free flow of water during the rainy season.

Several bigger dredging machines are already continuously dredging the Calmay River. (Leonardo Micua)
