Binloc boardwalk rehab underway
TONDALIGAN PARK
THE portion of the Tondaligan boardwalk that collapsed due to storm surge caused by Typhoon Kristine last year is undergoing full rehabilitation by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 1 office.
DPWH, which built the structure five years ago through the initiative of Fourth District Rep. Christopher De Venecia, tapped its own calamity fund for the repair work that started last month.
The repair involves driving down interconnected metal steel sheets at the damaged part to reinforce the structure as a whole against strong waves that are naturally occurring in that part of the Lingayen Gulf.
DPWH said it is adopting a more innovative approach to protect the pavement exclusively for pedestrians and for riding bicycles, including adjacent residential houses.
“We cannot really deny the impact of global warming,” De Venecia said, adding that the DPWH did not anticipate the increasing force of nature in that part of the Lingayen Gulf when it built the project.
At the same time, he called on barangay officials of Bonuan Binloc to strictly prohibit four-wheel vehicles from going through the boardwalk to protect the structural integrity of the infrastructure.
“May ilang pasaway kasi na pinasasampa pa ang mga kotse sa boardwalk,” he said.
Building a sea wall in the area was previously proposed for better protection, but it would have compromised the view of the sea. (Leonardo Micua)
