Pangasinan PNP warned residents 2 days before New Year

THE Pangasinan Police, led by P/Colonel Rollyfer Capoquian, did a ceremonial destruction of confiscated 1,381 illegal firecrackers and 238 mufflers, and boga (makeshift cannons) on December 30 as a warning about the risks associated with dangerous and illegal pyrotechnics.

In his remarks, Capoquian reflected on his past experiences with similar operations during his tenure with the National Capital Region Police Office, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety and order during the New Year festivities.

“These items — firecrackers, mufflers, and boga — pose significant threats to public safety. They are not only illegal but also harmful to health and can result in serious accidents,” he said.

He also stressed that the use of illegal mufflers, commonly found in modified motorcycles, contributes to noise pollution and increases the risk of accidents during the New Year celebrations.

Capoquian also urged the public to reconsider their traditional ways of celebrating New Year’s Eve.

“Instead of using firecrackers, I encourage everyone to use safer alternatives like torotots (horns) to make noise. It’s a safer, quieter, and more peaceful way to ring in the new year,” he added.

The operation, which began earlier in December, is part of the province’s efforts to maintain peace and order during the holiday season. Capoquian also noted that the crackdown aligns with preparations for the upcoming elections as police conduct regular checkpoints as part of a year-round crime prevention strategy.

In a follow-up interview, Capoquian provided an update on public safety during the holiday season.

“Since December 25, the province has been generally peaceful, with no major incidents reported,” he said. (Eva Visperas)
