San Carlos City Library goes beyond books and reading
THE San Carlos City Library remains dynamic in keeping public engagement, especially among the young population, in this digital era when physical libraries are often underrated and under-appreciated.
City Librarian Nerrisa Cabuay said many young people today are unfamiliar with the experience of browsing through physical books as internet searches have become the easier option for finding information.
This shift presents significant challenges for librarians who are tasked with demonstrating the effective use of funds allocated to them by local government units (LGUs) and ensuring that essential services are provided to the community.
Cabuay emphasized the critical role of libraries in improving literacy rates within communities as she expressed gratitude to the San Carlos LGU for its substantial support in implementing various programs within the library.
Among these programs and services are training sessions and social media marketing courses in collaboration with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). The library also facilitates applications for SSS, salary loans, maternity benefits, PAG-Ibig online services, as well as DFA and NBI services, helping to alleviate long queues in government offices.
The San Carlos City Library, the first in Pangasinan to provide access to World Book Online, enabling patrons to access e-resources and a vast collection of theses and journals, was cited this year by the National Library of the Philippines for its exceptional services to children, with Cabuay being honored as Librarian of the Year.
It has also received the Regional Tech4Ed Award, highlighting its commitment to advancing digital literacy and access to information in the community. (Ahikam Pasion)
