THE Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) recorded 458 HIV cases in Ilocos Region from January to August 2024, with Pangasinan logging the highest number at 272, including 33 in Dagupan City.

La Union was second with 70 cases; Ilocos Sur, 61; and Ilocos Norte, 55.  Most of the cases were male at 432, and 26 were female with 16 deaths reported.

The RESU data was released by the Department of Health (DOH)-Ilocos Region, in collaboration with the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMHMC) during the 1st AIDS Summit in Laoag City, in commemoration of World AIDS Day to raise awareness of the rights of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and to strengthen the commitment among HIV stakeholders in the region

Recognizing the rights of PLHIVs reduces the exposure to HIV/AIDS, prevents stigma and reduces discrimination.

As health care providers, We must protect and promote the rights of these individuals concerning access to health care, including employment, education, travel, housing and social welfare to enhance the quality of life,” Regional Director Paula Paz Sydiongco said.

The DOH-R1 also launched a video-making contest with the participation of the treatment hubs in the region based on this year’s theme, “Take the Rights Path”, which portrays the different human rights of PLHIV. Plaques and cash prizes were given to winners during the awarding ceremony.

Summit participants had informative discussions regarding the National Response toward ending AIDS by 2030 and the Rights of PLHIV and transgender persons.  (DOH-R1-CMU)
