THE local government of Agno will dredge parts of the Balincaguing River to minimize overflow in the future.  The town is one of the coastal towns severely flooded during the onslaught of Typhoon Kristine on October 25.

Agno Mayor Gualberto Sison said over 60 families in coastal barangays such as West, Bobuy, Aliabon, and Baruan were evacuated as the typhoon triggered a storm surge while rainfall filled up rivers.

He said the Balincaguing River has become dangerously shallow.

“At low tide, it is practically walkable, making it challenging for many residents to cross to the other side,” he said.

Several houses were also damaged by fallen trees, although were no reports of properties swept away by floodwaters, farmers suffered losses as their rice crops were destroyed.

A state of calamity will likely be declared, according to the mayor, to tap into emergency funds to assist those affected. (Ahikam Pasion)
