BETS WAITING FOR LAST DAY

THE filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the 2025 midterm elections opened on October 1, with the turnout on the initial days more sluggish than the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) had anticipated.

Provincial COMELEC officials, led by Atty. Ericson Oganisa, the provincial election supervisor, said all their offices were fully prepared and security measures were in place to last until October 8, the last day of filing.

On Tuesday, only two notable candidates filed their COCs: Board Member Phillip Theodore Cruz from the 2nd District and incumbent 5th District Rep. Ramon Guico Jr., who are both seeking reelection.

They were joined by Incumbent 5th District Board Member Louie Sison and aspiring 5th District Board Member Jesus Basco.

Despite the slow start in Dagupan, City Election Officer Atty. Michael Franks Sarmiento noted that independent candidates typically file their COCs early, while prominent political figures often wait until the final days of the filing period.

After the COC filing period, the COMELEC plans to conduct an intensified information drive, including demonstrations on the use of the Automated Counting Machine (ACM) in municipalities, cities, and barangays. Each town will have an allotment of one ACM for the roadshow.

The campaign period will officially start in March 2025. (Ahikam Pasion)
