PAGASA raises hailstorm alert
THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned the public over the occurrence of hailstorms, which typically consist of small-sized hail but can still cause damage to crops, glass-built homes, and vehicles parked in uncovered areas.
According to Jose Estrada Jr., chief Meteorologist of PAGASA Dagupan, hailstorms are formed when raindrops are carried upward by thunderstorm updrafts into extremely cold regions of the atmosphere and freeze.
He said the phenomenon frequently occurs from May to October when the temperature is high and the formation of cumulonimbus clouds is prevalent.
On October 15, a hailstorm hit Barangay San Vicente East in Asingan that lasted three minutes. (Kim Gealogo)
