PNP scores big in drive versus illegal drugs in September 

SOME P32.1 million worth of illegal drugs were seized by the Police Regional Office 1 in 82 anti-drug operations in September that resulted in the arrest of 91 suspects.

P/Lt. Colonel Benigno Sumawang, PRO 1 regional information officer, said the confiscated drugs included marijuana plants, seedlings, and dried leaves as well as shabu. Among those arrested was the leader of a drug group in Bayambang from whom P5.8 million worth of illegal drugs were seized. Among the biggest raids was on a marijuana plantation in Ilocos Sur where P4.1 million worth of marijuana plants and seedlings were uprooted and burned.  (Mathew Pacheco)

2 high-value drug targets nabbed in Bayambang 

 TWO high-value target individuals were arrested during a buy-bust operation in Sison town, and P680,000 worth of shabu were seized from them.

Community-based anti-drug advocacy held in Manaoag

THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in Region 1 launched a Community Based Anti-Illegal Drugs Advocacy in Manaoag despite its recent declaration as a drug-free municipality.

P193 million onion cold storage plant set in Alcala 

THE Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) in Ilocos Region conducted profiling for onion farmers in Alcala town who stand to benefit from a proposed cold storage facility it plans to set up through funding from the World Bank, Department of Agriculture, and a minimal counterpart from the local government.

The cold storage plant, estimated to cost P193.6 million, was sought by a local onion cooperative. (Joana de Vera)

Man shot while collecting P2,000 debt 

A man who was collecting a P2,000 debt from a farmer in Barangay Barangobong, Villasis was shot and wounded.

Investigation showed the collector and the farmer first figured in a heated argument before the latter drew a pistol tucked in his waist and opened fire. The collector sustained one gunshot wound on his thigh and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment while the farmer is now the subject of manhunt by the Villasis police. (Jam Victorio)

1.2 metric tons of hot meat seized in Tayug

THE National Meat Inspection Service in Region 1, following a complaint from a resident, seized some 1.2 metric tons of hot chicken meat in the public market of Tayug, which came from an unregistered slaughterhouse.

The vendors who sold the hot meat were merely reprimanded and not fined, while the source is still being traced by the police. (Jam Victorio)

Lingayen landfill site still inoperable

THE local government of Lingayen apologized to residents as the Central Materials Facility in Barangay Quibaol that they still cannot accommodate their wastes beginning October 11 following the recent closure of the Metro Clark Sanitary Landfill in Capas, Tarlac, where all wastes from the capital town and other local governments in Pangasinan are being disposed of.

While still negotiating to bring Lingayen’s waste to the Metro Waste Sanitary Landfill in Urdaneta, the Lingayen government appealed to residents to segregate and recycle their wastes as a partial solution to the problem. (Jam Victorio)

Mangaldan MDRRMO seeks P23.1 annual budget 

 THE Mangaldan Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has proposed an annual budget of P 23.1 million for 2025.

At a recent budget hearing, Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer IV Rodolfo Corla said 70% of the amount will be earmarked for Preparedness, Prevention and Mitigation while the remaining 30% will be used for response, rehabilitation and recovery. (Rona Racca)

500,00k devotees flock to Manaoag 

SOME 500,000 Catholic devotees trooped to the Manaoag Minor Basilica to join the recent feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, which included a procession of the original image of the Our Lady of Manaoag.

371 teachers in Region 1 classified as poor 

A total of 371 teachers in the Ilocos Region are considered poor based on the result of Listahanan poverty survey conducted by the Department of Social Welfare Development Regional Office 1.

The number accounts for 0.87% of the total 42,458 teachers from various academic institutions in the region. The teachers listed as poor could be included among the beneficiaries of government ‘s social protection programs. (Joana de Vera)

Analyst warns voters on social media influence during campaign

SOCIAL media will play a crucial rule in disseminating the plans and programs of candidates in the coming 2025 mid-term election, according to Dr. Robert Go, a political analyst, but at the same time warned against the potential use of digital platforms to spread fake news.

He called on the public to verify contents and information being posted on social media by scrutinizing whether these came legitimate and trustworthy sources. Under Commission on Elections Resolution No. 11064, peddlers of fake news relating to the campaign and elections will face fines. (Mathew Pacheco)

DICT trains LGUs on cybersecurity 

THE Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region 1 is currently rolling out training programs for personnel of local government units on cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of awareness and preparedness against digital threats.

DICT reported having foiled the highest number or cyberattacks in the country in 2023 at 1,834, based on data from its Cybersecurity Bureau-National Computer Emergency Response Team. In the first quarter this year, the team monitored 281 incidents of hacking and is continuing to monitor other cyber threats. (Joana de Vera)
