Leptospirosis cases surge in Region 1
THE Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH CHD) is closely monitoring the rise in leptospirosis cases in the Ilocos Region, attributed to heavy rains and flooding.
Pangasinan had the highest number of cases with 71, including 19 in Dagupan City, out of the total 145 confirmed patients who were infected in the region, according to DOH CHD’s surveillance.
The other cases were in La Union, 47; Ilocos Sur, 14; and Ilocos Norte, 13.
Health officials expressed concerned about the high mortality rate due to leptospirosis, with 24 fatalities reported as of September 28. There were seven in Pangasinan, in Dagupan, and in La Union; two in Ilocos Sur; and one in Ilocos Norte.
In response, CHD-1 called on the public to promptly seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of leptospirosis, such as sudden high fever, body aches (especially in the legs), redness of the eyes, headache, and neck stiffness.
Other symptoms include difficulty urinating, liver enlargement, abdominal pain, and small red spots on the skin. (Ahikam Pasion)
