Espino: Let people be the judge on capitol compound
IT’S for the people to assess and judge whether the provincial capitol compound and its beachfront is cleaner and more beautiful now than three years ago, said former Gov. Amado Espino III who is running in May 2025 to reclaim the province’s top seat.
Speaking over Aksyon Radyo Dagupan on October 22, he deplored how the current administration under Gov. Ramon Guico III had chopped down large trees, including several that were centuries old, in the compound and discontinued the lighting in the bay walk area.
The sheds that were built during the Espinos’ administration just behind the Urduja House and the capitol for the public’s use while enjoying the beach and the sea were also demolished.
He said the capitol complex used to be a welcoming open, green space for the people and was a popular tourist attraction.
“That’s why I was insulted when the incumbent top officials of the province declared that the provincial capitol compound, when he took over, seemed to look like a forest and that seemed was his only reason in getting rid of those trees there,” said Espino who will be up against Guico’s re-election bid.
He noted that when typhoons toppled and uprooted the trees during his time, “we had to use a crane to put these back on the soil for them to live instead of cutting them because trees, like humans, have life and feelings.” (Leonardo Micua)
