THE upgrade of Pangasinan Provincial Hospital (PPH) in San Carlos City from Level 2 to Level 3 was approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) during its September 9 session with a resolution authorizing Governor Ramon Guico III to apply for accreditation for the upgrade.

Vice Governor Mark Ronald Lambino, the SP’s presiding officer, said the Department of Health will conduct an initial assessment and determine the requirements, i.e., facilities and equipment, which will be the basis for Congress to enact a supporting law.

A Level 3 hospital status will require additional capabilities, including the potential to serve as a teaching and training facility, aligning with the province’s plan to establish its own School of Medicine and Public Health at Pangasinan Polytechnic College. The upgrade will also involve increasing bed capacity and expanding services.

As a training facility, the hospital will offer specialized programs in areas such as pediatrics, surgery, neurology, cardiology, among others. Lambino noted that this is not a short-term project and will involve significant planning and compliance.

“Based on our timeline, we’re looking at a short to medium term, approximately two years,” he said.  (Eva Visperas)
